The message won't get sent before both of you are online anyway. Maby usefull, but not so important.
In the MSN Messenger case, the message is stored on Microsoft's servers, and sent when the reciever comes online.
Maby the smart developers can come up with an solution to store the message in the network, and send it from anyone who see the reciever first. :-)

I don't think it would be worth the effort.

It's easy, you can store it locally in your client, no need for a server. When the user is online the message will be sent. Set the Timeout to 48hours or something like that. Maybe you can have a "Message send pending .." box that indicates that the message will be sent. You can even have the possibility to delete the message.
.. ok, maybe not small changes but since you opened pandoras box by adding a chat function you're asking for it ;)

offline messages would be an interesting feature if oneswarm would be aware of "common friends". If A wants to send a message to friend B who's offline at the moment the message could be stored at the friends C, D and E which are friends of A and B. When B goes online and A is not, B would get the message then from C, D or E.
