I'm running 1S on Lubuntu 11.10 and the Java process is using over 500MB of RAM. I'm also running RetroShare which is only using 80MB.
1S uses too much memory!(3 posts) (3 voices)
On linux you can edit the OneSwarm script to limit ram usage, the last line contains "-Xmx256m". If you only have a few friends, and don't share 1000s of torrents you can safely change 256 to 128 (or even less). We purposefully keep it high since most users have plenty of ram (8GB of ram ~$40) and we wanted to be on the safe side.
Yeah 8GB is standard now, even 16GB most of the time on new systems. It's very cheap. Hard drive is the most expensive part now, if you want a 2x2TB raid1 which used to be standard last year. And huge hard drives is what you really need to run 1S. :)
