   I have selected two files using OneSwarm search, that is, two torrents that I expect are not public torrents because I found them using OneSwarm. I notice that one shows a tracker URL of

   http://tracker.not.needed.invalid/announce

   while the other shows

   http://tracker.openbittorrent.com/announce

   This second looks like I'm using a public bittorrent tracker, although I currently show a connection error for it. I certainly do not want to be using a public tracker, so I'm interested in what this means.

   the first one was created by oneswarm, so it has no tracker. That one is just shared in the friend-to-friend network.

   The second one was created and uploaded to a normal bittorrent site, then a oneswarm user downloaded it and shared it in the f2f network. Now anyone in the f2f network can download the file anonymously.

   The reason you get a connection error on the tracker is because you have the file set to friend-to-friend only, which means that no connections to the public internet are allowed. If you want you can enable "public internet" and download it using normal bittorrent, but if you do that it means that the download no longer is private so for most files you want to keep it friend-to-friend only.

   What you describe is what I expected was going on.

   Let me ask my question in a different way, if I select a files to download from the OneSwarm web interface search, will they automatically always be downloaded anonymously?

   The behaviour described by the second paragraph from isdal describes what I want to be happening and what I have always assumed to be the case.

   Paragraph three is what made me wonder. It seems to say that if I wanted to, I could set something in the software such that a file that I got from the OneSwarm web interface file search that included the original tracker information could be downloaded over the public network.

   How can I make sure that is not so? Where in the web interface or the classic UI do I find this?

   I don't know if it makes a difference to this discussion or not, so I should mention that I do use OneSwarm as a regular bittorrent client to download anime from public torrent servers. Do I need to turn this ability off completely to ensure that I am not accidentally downloading a file publicly because of how some other OneSwarm user acquired it?

   Hi Tudza

   Any "swarm" found via the Web UI (keyword search, or eddk or sha1 hash search) will be shared only in the OneSwarm network, meaning not publicly, whatever other users do.

   Even a torrent download started as public, can then be limited to OneSwarm network sharing. This is done by modifying its "visibility" to "friends" in the Web UI. Of course the performance will be badly affected.
