If my circle of friends are seeding a file, and another person outside my circle (we didn't exchange keys)is also seeding it, will I benefit from their bandwidth. Or does that person need to be on my friends list in order for me to gain needed bandwidth.

I just don't understand the question.
Whatever you do, you are connected to your friends only. The bandwidth depends on them and you. If something passes throu them to you, you get it.
Of course if they are sharing to a lot of people and you download isn't at full you up/down standards, it will be better to have a new friend sharing that file. However you won't be doing that easy in most of the cases so you shouldn't fuss about that problem. If you downloads aren't fulfilled, make more friends.

If I understand the f2f-protocol correctly then all connections are made with a kind of encrypted vpn-tunnel-like-connections.
For those connections to work you need to exchange keys.
So the answer to this question is that you will NOT benifit of that other persons bandwidth directly like in normal torrent mode.
But on the other hand. Often more than one route to the seeder exists in the f2f-network so it is a good thing to have many friends as long you CPU can take it. A lot of friends in limited mode is good for bumbing up your download/upload speed.
Just dont have more than 800 friends in your list!
The limitation in modern windows operating systems has a limitations on how many connections can be made (so called ip-stack limitation for SYN-connections) and trying to connect to more than 800 friends will take longer than the time set for next resync, and that is bad for your stability...Posted 1 year ago # -
I guess I wasn't very clear about my explanation.
Say that I am seeding a file to a friend. My friend has a friend in his circle, which I don't have on my friends list. Would that third party friend be providing bandwidth by seeding the file for all the friends on my list who are downloading it?

I have the same question.
I try to simplify it:
A has file share.zip
C has the same file share.zip
B are friends with both A and C. A and C do not know each other.
So when B downloads share.zip from A, will C also seed it to him i.e. provide the bandwidth?Posted 7 months ago # -
Afaik, the answer is yes.
B will regularly flood OneSwarm network with search messages for share.zip.
If one of these messages reaches C, he will also provide B with data.Posted 7 months ago #
