With signed torrent you know, that the content is almost certainly not fake.</p> <p>While the content's is signed, the signer's identity is not revealed. The only measure we then have is past experience with content provided by him. That's why signing is useful, you don't know who it really was, but you know what he already shared.</p> <p>Also all files within signed torrent (ie. their hashes) can be trusted. There was this debate some time ago about "caching" files being transmitted. If we drop the idea of encrypted tunnel for some content, then identity of sender and receiver could still remain anonymous, while the content transferred not. Content could be cached and if someone else wanted it, he would download it immedietely, without knowing if it goes from cache or not.</p> <p>Imagine a tunnel between user A and C: A-B-C. B is someone in the middle of the tunnel. And then C want do download TV series GoT which is TV ripped and signed by well known release group. Then he will search the network for the hashes and download it, without knowing if any middleman is filesharing it or not. But because it is well known, it could be transmitted unencrypted (or encrypted with it's own hash as a password) and cached on the intermediate nodes (B node from example). Each node would have a list of trusted content providers (ie. release groups), and cache their results. If anyone wanted do download from A and his tunnel would go also through B, he could download from B's cache directly.</p> <p>Then most popular content would be qucikly available within the network without breaking anonymity. Because the content would be encrypted with AES and password would be the hash of the file, there still would be plausible deniability for case that fore exeample the content is breaching someones's copyriright.</p> <p>By having the content signed, the one who signed it has taken responsibility for the content. In the same way that cloud storage is not responsible for content their users store at their services, in the same way anyone acting as a cache should not be responsible.</p> <p>In the past, some people objected to the "cache" idea because it was not morally acceptable for them to cache for example CP or extremist materials or propaganda. But it is highly improbable for an established release group to start releasing really nasty content.
